The Lovers
Tarot Number: 6
Zodiac Sign: Gemini
The Lovers card signifies harmony and perfection in a partnership. It speaks of a couple secure in their union, empowering and mutually supporting each other. You may be blessed with a relationship that is both spiritually or sexually fulfilling, or you could enjoy a platonic relationship defined by mutual trust. You work well together, your actions synergistically balanced.
An alternative message of the Lovers card is choice. Having undergone the indoctrination of the Hierophant, you could now be faced with two opposing viewpoints. You must decide which one you stand for, as part of your personal philosophy. Only by choosing authentically can you be true to yourself, and true to those around you.
The artwork depicts Hades and Persephone, the King and Queen of the Underworld. According to mythology, their relationship was the catalyst for the changing seasons. During the autumn equinox, Persephone would journey to the Underworld to join her husband, which served as an allegory for nature’s transition from spring to frost. During the spring equinox, Persephone would ascend to the surface again, heralding nature’s first blooms. In the artwork, the couple, crowned and richly-dressed, walk through a sunlit passageway where roses climb across the walls. The moment is ambiguous. It could depict their autumnal reunion, or their springtime parting. Like the Lovers card, they embody a choice, and must honor what is best for their union.
Upright: Harmony, partnership, mutual alignment.
Reversed: Imbalance, discord, inauthenticity.
